Why Flights to Nepal's Mountain Airports Get Delayed So Often
Lukla and Nepal's other mountain airstrips are notorious for delays. The reasons are mostly about geography and weather, not mismanagement — here's what's actually going on.
Anyone who has flown to Lukla, Jomsom, or one of Nepal's other mountain airstrips has likely experienced a delay — sometimes a few hours, occasionally a full day or more. It's a near-universal part of Himalayan trekking logistics, and understanding why helps explain why building buffer days into an itinerary isn't optional so much as essential.
Short takeoff and landing airstrips
Lukla's Tenzing–Hillary Airport, the gateway to the Everest region, is one of the most famous short takeoff and landing (STOL) airstrips in the world — a roughly 527-meter runway set on a steep slope at nearly 2,850 m elevation, with mountains on one end and a drop-off on the other. Aircraft serving these routes are small STOL-capable planes, typically carrying under 20 passengers, and their safe operation depends on tight visibility and wind conditions that mountain weather doesn't reliably provide.
Weather windows, not schedules
Mountain weather in Nepal changes fast, and cloud cover typically builds through the morning, which is why most Lukla flights depart at first light, when visibility tends to be best. A flight scheduled for later in the day is far more likely to be delayed or cancelled outright than an early-morning one. This isn't a quirk of any particular airline — it reflects the physical reality of flying small aircraft into a narrow mountain valley without the instrument-landing infrastructure available at larger airports.
The knock-on effect
Because there are a limited number of daily flight slots and aircraft, a morning of poor weather can back up the entire day's schedule, and a multi-day stretch of bad weather can strand trekkers in Kathmandu, Lukla, or Ramechhap (an alternative departure point used during peak season to reduce congestion at Kathmandu's main airport) for days at a time. This is one of the most common reasons trekking itineraries recommend building in one or two spare days, particularly toward the end of a trip, before an international flight home.

Airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal have made incremental changes over the years to manage this — including shifting some Lukla-bound flights to depart from Ramechhap during the busiest trekking months, reducing congestion and delays at Kathmandu's single-runway international airport. Helicopter transfers have also become a more common (if pricier) backup option for trekkers who need to guarantee a connection.
The practical takeaway
None of this means mountain flights are unsafe — Nepal's aviation authorities and airlines operate under real safety constraints that are precisely why flights get delayed rather than flown in marginal conditions. The practical lesson for travelers is logistical, not a safety concern: never book a same-day onward international flight immediately after a mountain trek, and treat delay as the expected case rather than the exception when planning a Himalayan itinerary.
