Pokhara is Nepal's tourism capital, a lakeside city on the shore of Phewa Lake with the Annapurna range — including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna I and Manaslu, three of the world's ten highest peaks — visible on a clear day within 15 to 35 miles. Nepal's second-largest city, with just over 600,000 residents as of the 2021 census, Pokhara sits at roughly 822 m above sea level, considerably lower and warmer than the mountain towns it serves as a gateway to. In 2024 the city was formally declared Nepal's tourism capital, cementing a role it has effectively held for decades as the country's most visited base outside Kathmandu.
Phewa Lake is the heart of the city — rowing or paddling a traditional wooden boat out to the small Tal Barahi Temple on its island is one of the simplest, most popular things to do here, especially near sunset when the Annapurnas turn pink over the water. Above the city, Sarangkot is the classic sunrise viewpoint for the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges and one of the most established paragliding launch sites in the world, with tandem flights descending to Lakeside. Pokhara's karst geology has also produced notable cave systems, including Mahendra Cave and the deep, water-carved Gupteshwor Cave near Devi's Fall, where the Pardi Khola river disappears underground. Across the lake, a steep but manageable climb leads to the World Peace Pagoda, a stark white stupa with one of the best combined views of the lake and the Annapurna skyline.
Pokhara is the starting point for most Annapurna-region treks, including the Annapurna Base Camp trek (typically 7–10 days) and the longer Annapurna Circuit. Even travelers not planning a multi-day trek often do a short walk to Australian Camp or Dhampus for a taste of the trail and Himalayan views without the full commitment. Beyond trekking, the city has become a genuine adventure-sports hub: ultralight flights over the Annapurnas, zip-lining, white-water rafting on the nearby Seti and Trishuli rivers, and canyon activities near Kushma, a couple of hours west.
October and November, right after the monsoon, generally offer the clearest mountain views and the most stable weather, making this the busiest season. March and April bring warmer temperatures and rhododendron blooms in the surrounding hills, with slightly higher cloud risk. The June–September monsoon brings lush green valleys and dramatically lower visibility of the peaks, along with the occasional flight delay on the Kathmandu–Pokhara route. Winter (December–February) is cold at altitude but usually clear and much quieter than peak season.
Pokhara is roughly a 25-minute domestic flight from Kathmandu, or a scenic 6–8 hour drive along the Prithvi Highway, passing through the Trishuli river valley. The city's newer international airport has also opened limited direct connections from a small number of overseas cities, though most international travelers still connect via Kathmandu.
Base yourself in the Lakeside (Baidam) neighborhood for walkable access to the lake, restaurants and gear shops. If you want a Sarangkot sunrise, arrange transport the evening before — vehicles queue early during the October–November high season. Trekking permits for the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACAP) are best arranged in Pokhara itself, at the Nepal Tourism Board office, rather than left until the trailhead.
